The Genealogy of Christ
Matthew 1:1-17

The Jewish genealogies were important for many reasons:
- Family was important to the Jews.
- The genealogy proved their identity.
- The genealogy determined their claim to land.
- The genealogy determined their right to inheritance.
- The genealogy determined who was the legal heir to the family blessing.
- The genealogy determined who could be the priest.
- The genealogy determined there basis of taxation.
- The genealogy determined any claim to be king.
Jesus’ genealogy teaches us:
- The Bible’s genealogies help confirm the historical reliability of the Bible.
- The genealogy of Christ shows God fulfills His promises and His word.
Genesis 3:15
- The genealogy of Christ shows we have a Savior who is fully man and fully Jew.
- The genealogy of Christ proves the messiah-ship of Jesus and shows that Jesus fulfills all the messianic prophecies.
- The genealogy of Christ points to the sovereignty of God.
Isaiah 46:8-11
- The Genealogy of Christ shows us that salvation is also for the Gentiles.
- The Genealogy of Christ show that God can use imperfect people for His purposes.
