The Jewish genealogies were important for many reasons:

  1. Family was important to the Jews.
  2. The genealogy proved their identity.
  3. The genealogy determined their claim to land.
  4. The genealogy determined their right to inheritance.
  5. The genealogy determined who was the legal heir to the family blessing.
  6. The genealogy determined who could be the priest.
  7. The genealogy determined there basis of taxation.
  8. The genealogy determined any claim to be king.

 

Jesus’ genealogy teaches us:

  1. The Bible’s genealogies help confirm the historical reliability of the Bible.
  2. The genealogy of Christ shows God fulfills His promises and His word.

  1. The genealogy of Christ shows we have a Savior who is fully man and fully Jew.

 

  1. The genealogy of Christ proves the messiah-ship of Jesus and shows that Jesus fulfills all the messianic prophecies.

 

  1. The genealogy of Christ points to the sovereignty of God.
